Description When specifically authorized by the Chief of Police, Class Two Special Law Enforcement Officers are authorized to exercise full police powers and duties similar to those of a permanent, regularly appointed full-time police officer. Examples of Duties The SLEO Class II is a part-time member of the Police Department. May be scheduled for up to twenty (20) hours per week to provide public safety and law enforcement services. Maintain order at public gatherings using crowd control techniques. Regulate and control pedestrian and vehicular traffic for safe and rapid movement. Authorized to exercise full powers similar to full-time police officers. Use of a firearm authorized only after full certification and completion of prescribed training. Conduct vehicle and foot patrols. Enforce criminal laws, traffic laws, and city ordinances. Typical Qualifications Must be a U.S. citizen. Resident of New Jersey. Valid New Jersey driver’s license. High School Diploma or Equivalency. Sound body and good health to qualify for the Police and Firemen’s Retirement System of New Jersey. At least 18 years old and not over 35 at program completion. Proficient in reading, writing, and speaking English. Of good moral character, with no criminal convictions. Supplemental Information Applicants must be enrolled in college. Completion of a Police Training Commission approved Class 2 Police Academy is required. Training includes physical fitness, criminal law, patrol concepts, firearms, vehicle operations, defensive tactics, handcuffing, OC spray, arrest, search, and seizure. Not eligible for COAC benefits.
